Hi all
I am new here so first of all...Hello I hope you are well?
Now onto my question. I hope you can provide some insight?
I am a new yoga teacher and despite dedicated practise (as much as I can fit in every day - honestly, sometimes 15 minutes sometimes 90 minutes!) there are still some postures I am struggling with in the primary series.
My basic problem is that my hips are still incredibly tight and therefore I am worried about teaching some of the postures where I require more flexibility e.g. , supta kurmasana, baddha konasana even my virabhadrasana is far from perfect. I am aware that it is going to take some time for my own hips to catch up and I am trying to be patient (and doing as much yin yoga as I can!) but I wondered how to get around this issue when teaching. I am aware that not all my beginners are going to have the same issues with their hips but I want to lead by example and demonstrate as properly as I can? Do I leave these harder postures out until I'm improved or just admit my weaknesses???
Also if anyone can help suggest to me how I can work on opening my hips I would be most grateful? Could it be an emotional reason they are resisting?

I would just be honest to your students. I think they would appreciate knowing that you cannot do every pose perfectly, is there a teacher that can?! My teacher has had a bad knee so dislikes certain poses but it doesn't stop her teaching us them!
If you are demonstrating a pose, you can say that you are not very good at this one because of your hips. When your students manage to do it well you can give praise and say you wished you could do it that well!

Yogamatt is right, just be honest with them. I have been practising for 16 years and teaching for 6 and I can't do every asana. Awareness and acceptance of our own limitations is a lesson in itself. I am 5 foot tall and no matter how much 'stretching' I do, I will never be 6 foot, it is just the way I'm built. Your students are your biggest teachers and you will always have a few who will be able to demonstrate a posture you can't do. Guide them and be guided by them. Offer them the oppurtunity to ask you questions, it is ok not to have the answer, you are only as human as they are. We as teaachers are constantly learning; the moment we think we know it all is the day we should stop teaching.
You will be fine.
Om Shanti

Many centuries ago precisely in India , Yoga was originated and as not expected it was originated by men . Yoga has many benefits to provide the body with like gaining flexibilty , reducing stress and doing more efficient inspiration and expiration.
But as any other kind of sport it needs its special gear , so to maximize your gain from this nice sport you need to buy the right mens yoga wear which includes mainly the mens yoga pants.
Men's yoga wear is designed specially to accommodate the stretching moves and posing done in class giving the flexibility needed in addition to absorbing sweat and providing good air circulation especially if made out of organic cotton.

Being a first-timer at yoga, I have a couple questions about getting started and where to find helpful information.
What where your first steps when you began yoga for the first time?
What benefits have you seen?
What type of yoga do you find most beneficial and why?
Any type or tricks for a newbie?
Thank you!! |

If I were you I would try a drop in lesson before signing up for a number of lessons. Search on the internet of yoga classes in your area and check out their websites if they have one. Try different classes and teachers to find the right teacher you most feel comfortable with!
At the moment I am attending Ashtanga classes but have also been to Hatha classes. It's all good for stretching and relaxation! You get out of it, what you put in. The more you practice the more you feel the benefits of becoming more flexible, core strength and more at peace with yourself and with others. My tip:- I practice different poses at home in front of a mirror to make sure I'm in the correct position. You can then make adjustments. |

The benfits of yoga are countless. Suffice to say that it is the best system developed to keep you healthy at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual plane. The beauty of yoga is that it is holistic.
As regards the type of yoga, please understand that no 2 human beings are same - what is goose for you may be gander for me. Yoga is experiential. You should try out a few types of yoga and find out which is best for you and then go deeper into that.

Initially, Goa was discovered as a safe haven by hippies and as many hippies do yoga on a regular basis, many yoga centres came up. So, as far as yoga centres are concerned, there is a deluge especially druing the season (Oct to March). You can have your pick because of varities of yogastyle and the teachers. Many renowned teachers hold workshops and seminars during this period. If you are particular about any style then just go ahead and immerse yourself. Otherwise sample some classes and then go for the one that resonates with you.

Yoga Teacher,

Anyone interested in a yoga weekend? I have a place on yoga weekend for 2-4th December at Taraloka in Shropshire which I very sadly cant make. I have paid a £50 deposit- the overall cost is variable depending on your earnings status- their suggested donation is £110/£70/£30. I would only request that you pay me £40 of the deposit and you can work out the rest with them.Taraloka was voted the best retreat in UK for 2 years running... so its a steal. http://www.taraloka.org.uk/?page_id=3853
