i have never done yoga before but am fairly healthy and young. my two main goals for starting yoga is
1) to increase my flexibility
2) to prepare for getting pregnant (my husband and i plan to start a family in a few years time so i want to strengthen my body in preparation and reduce the unpleasant side affects of pregnancy such as loss of "tightness" and sagging)
the two forms of yoga i am currently considering is iyengar and astanga. i cant decide if i should have 3 months private tuition with iyengar and then move onto astanga once ive got more used to yoga or if i should just go as a beginner to astanga?
im leaning more towards having three months prep with iyengar and then going for astanga but i would love to hear others opinions, thank you :) |

hi, i have been practicing ashtanga for about 5 years and never have looked back, but i think it's important to try many styles to see which one attracts you the most, and your thoughts to try both are wise. try going to some drop in classes on iyengar and do a beginners ashtanga course. enjoy the journey! |

With the popularity of yoga, it has developed focuses such as yoga for backs or focuses on specific groups of people. Pregnant women have created a demand on yoga. Prenatal yoga focuses on poses and workouts that are good for the pregnancy and the woman. While there are many poses that are not good for pregnant women there are many that they can utilize to help stay in shape and even help their pregnancy. If you are pregnant it is good to talk to an instructor to decide which poses will be best for you. Your poses will be limited as the pregnancy progresses due to the enlarged belly.
This video series will explore different yoga poses that are good for pregnant women. The "Cat Cow" is a pose in which you are on all fours. This will allow you stretch out the spine and the pelvis. The "Cobbler's Pose" is a great prenatal pose that will be demonstrated. It is a seated pose that will open up the hips and groin area. Doing these various poses along with walking or some form of cardio with help keep you fit throughout your pregnancy.

I would highly recommended that you look into the differenty types of yoga before you try yoga. So many people take a style that is too advanced for them and they become very discouraged. I found an atricle that explains the diffenent types so that you can pick the style that you are ready for. You can find this at http://www.einmotion.com Click on news and events and you will find a few great yoga articles for beginners. Good luck, yoga is wonderful! |

I have been practising yoga since 1972 and have had many Teachers, but prefer the B K S Iyengar system.
I have attended Classes with a lovely Lady named Jayne from your area she is on 0121 REMOVED
if you contact her she will probably advise you and maybe you can go to her classes..
I am 75 in August so can heartily recommend yoga if you want to stay young and able.

Before you buy a bunch of private classes go to some studioes that offer different styles. To get in shape and tone and tighten the best styles are Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow and Power yoga. Vinyasa or just Flow is great as it isn't repetitive, done to music, really fun and gives you an amazing workout. I am a teacher of this style and in my classes I have beginners to advanced students and all can go to their level. As we do different poses there is always the option to go further if you are ready. Rememeber your internal pelvic floor exercises! |

I teach at several leisure centres and started using music at a low volume to first of all cover up the noise coming from the gym ,and other classes which tend to use high intensity music for their chosen disciplines. I use gentle indian flute, chants and new age ambient which I find not only covers up the stuff blaring out from other studios and gym etc but also creates a nice backdrop for my classes.
Feedback from my students is always positive and my classes are always well attended .One of my duties as a yoga teacher is to ensure that the right conditions are created for a class ,lighting, clean mats, proper heating and music if i think its needed.
Also managed to get four of my students to come along to a krishna das kirtan last week after playing his music in class.
Namaste,
Ian. |
