I dont know the school of natural health sciences but given massage is a physical activity and requires hands on experience the only part you might learn from a distance course is the anatomy and physiology part.

Nothing can teach you hands on without the teacher being there when you practice. So maybe do the anatomy and physiology section as a distance course and then go to a school to learn the hands on part. Practicing on friends etc is helpful but only when you have received direct guidance from an expert.

I agree with Graham and would like to add that it is so important to check what the qualification is at the end. There are dozens of dubious so called "recognised colleges" or "National holistic college of xxxxxxxx". Who are nothing more than money taking in exchange for a few meaningless letters after your name. So my advise would be check out if it’s ITEC or similar. Contact the awarding body and see what it does.

Check the specifics. There are many good courses and sadly there are some very dodgy ones on offer especially distance ones.

Hey Katy,

I have to agree with these other responses you have had to your post, anatomy & physiology is fine to learn by corespondance, but you will need "hands on" clinical hours if you are to learn massage techniques correctly. I also agree that there are far too many "private colleges" out there who don't offer a nationally recognised courses and are there to make money only. My advice to you would be to do a 2 year Diploma of Health Science in masage Therapy through the Australian TAFE system so you know your qualifications will be legitimate when you finish. Also it is possible to do the Diploma of Health Science for free at TAFE if you go through the correct channels for fee exemptions rather than paying out thousands of dollars for a so called "10 week Diploma" through some of these more dubious colleges.
Please email me if I can help in any way

Yours Sincerely,
Jason Boyer Dip.Hlth.Sc.
